Lifestyle Connections
Embarking on a travel nursing journey is an adventure in itself, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle is crucial for both physical and mental well-being. In this blog post, we'll delve into the world of fitness tailored for the nomadic life of a travel nurse. Discover practical tips, workout routines, and motivational insights to keep you active, energized, and thriving on the road.
Adaptable Workout Routines:
If you aren’t a gym person, you should find versatile workout routines that can be easily adapted to various settings, from compact housing to spacious campgrounds. This would be “at home” workouts, or any workouts that don’t require equipment. Incorporate bodyweight exercises, resistance bands, and portable workout equipment to ensure a well-rounded fitness regimen without the need for a gym. This would be a great idea for travel nurses who stay in Airbnb’s since you will have to pack all of your belongings in your vehicle. Most hotels offer gym amenities during your stay which would be a great way to get your workouts in.
Utilizing Local Resources:
Take advantage of the diverse landscapes and recreational opportunities each assignment location offers. We stayed at a campground in Hot Springs, Arkansas called Cloud Nine RV Park. They had two different walking trails on their property and we utilized those daily, even before I went in for my shift that night. The trails were also pet friendly and included waste bags and trash cans for easy disposal. We have also stayed in places that have recreation parks that included tennis, golf, volleyball, and basketball.

Connect with fellow travel nurses and fitness enthusiasts through online communities.
Join virtual workout classes, challenges, or wellness groups to stay motivated and share experiences with like-minded individuals. Groups like these can also keep you accountable in your fitness journey which will make you more successful in your goals. If virtual classes aren’t your forte, you can opt for YouTube fitness videos that you can follow along with indoors or outdoors.
Nutrition on the Go:
The challenges of maintaining a healthy diet while constantly on the move are difficult to overcome. I work night shift and I used the excuse that I needed to snack all night to stay awake for the longest time. I soon found out after I started my fitness journey that you get so much more energy by eating healthy and working out. Try to plan and prep nutritious meals, explore local farmers' markets, and make mindful choices when dining out to fuel your body for the demands of a travel nurse lifestyle. You need to be able to go out and explore the places you go, so don’t let bad eating habits slow you down!
Prioritizing Self-Care:
Don’t forget to recognize the importance of rest and recovery in a demanding profession. Nursing puts so much stress on our bodies because we are taking care of everyone else before we take care of ourselves. How many of you reading this are nurses, parents, and/or spouses? This can make a huge difference in the level of stress you carry. You are responsible for taking care of your child, worrying about your spouse, and taking care of your patients on top of ensuring their family members are coping with the situations at hand, all before focusing on the responsibility you have of taking care of yourself. This doesn’t even include all the financial and personal responsibilities you have like making sure your bills are paid, cooking dinner, grocery shopping, getting chores done, the list goes on. Prioritize self-care to the best of your ability so you can decrease your level of stress, and that may even help you to lose weight. You can try to incorporate practices such as yoga, meditation, or stretching into your routine to enhance overall well-being and manage stress.
Balancing Shifts and Workouts:
Develop a flexible workout schedule that accommodates your nursing shifts. I like to work weekends because it gives me the flexibility I need for my life in general. With a toddler and husband traveling with me, I like to make the most out of my days off. Since I work nights, I like to have all of my days off in a row so I can be awake during those days off. This gives me four days to go to the gym and enjoy my workout while also being able to explore all the things my location has to offer. If that is not an option for you, embrace quick and effective workouts during breaks or days off to maintain consistency without feeling overwhelmed.
As a travel nurse, prioritizing your fitness journey is an investment in your health and happiness on the road. With adaptable routines, local exploration, virtual connections, mindful nutrition, and self-care practices, you can thrive in both your career and your fitness pursuits.
